Appeal to Their Inner Desire - Air Purification Simplified
While everyone else talks about about the health benefits of air purifiers, John Carlton and Dan Kennedy brainstormed on this very topic. John felt vanity was the best emotion to tap, and Dan came up with a variation on the headline I used. Hey, if there's a proven methodology I can take advantage of for a client, I use it. Especially (and always) when money to be made is the bottom line. Although I wrote the compelling persuasive copy, when a headline is proven to vacuum cash from your customers ethically, why re-invent the wheel, as they say. Such is the case here. (PDF)

In this Direct Mail excerpt, notice how I start off painting a grim picture, then talk about a solution. People don't generally like to be sold on a product, they want a solution. The product, an expensive massage therapy machine, isn't even mentioned until after page 3. This letter takes advantage of the fact that people will take action to avoid pain before they will to gain pleasure.
